This weekend, the final was supposed to be held. I received an email stating this: ” Government has suspended all team sports for 15 days after yesterday’s violence — still not confirmed if this includes amateur sport”. What happened?
It seems a fight between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos fans using stones, knifes, … hitting anyone in their range is the reason. It was on Lavrio street, not to far from Glyka Nera pitch. Final score, 1 dead and many injuries.
This shows us how rugby and football are such a different world. Will our so long waited first final game be postponed? canceled?
I am sad for Greece having so dumb people.
it is stupid decision…
In italy when the ban took place after the killing of the policeman, the weekend game of ITALY-WALES took place and obviously there was no violence.
Very disappointing for everyone in rugby but glad the government did something to diffuse the situation. It should be noted that this was not Football violence but that the incident occurred on the way to a women’s volleyball match. Rugby in Greece needs to be aware of what could happen if the ethics of the game are submerged in petty club politics. We must all hope that the final is rescheduled and that it goes ahead with supporter so both teams mingling freely and drinking together in the bars – whichever team wins.
Your rugby championship is definitely doomed. No one in Greece will ever follow Rugby anyway.
Hi all,
I can hardly find words to describe my sadness concerning the events that caused this suspension.
I’m convinced that in a logical and sane world, violence has no place whatsoever in sports.
The fact that these thugs – because that’s what they are – believe that modern heroïsm can be found in useless and pointless hooligan-battles in the streets, describes their inability to act as a human being.
The responsibles should be severely punished.
Let us thank God that we play rugby, where hooliganism and other phenomenons of bad sportsmanship have no home.
Let’s pray for a better world,
Michael.
Just to repeat what I said before but which does not appear to have been posted – these incidents took place over a women’s volleyball game.
Rugby must not be smug and believe that it cannot happen. It is vital that the clubs work hard on not building barriers against each other, that the blind divisions that turn sports supporters into killers do not exist in this game.
Here’s hoping the final will be rescheduled and be played in a spirit fitting to the game.
I think rugby in Greece will have more support if us greeks win some more matches. It must be noted that the hooligans were using olympiakos and panathinaikos rivalry as an excuse for violence.

Hi Fiona,
let me investigate that. A list of all pub based on areas might be handy!
